Stewardship Reflection
Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today’s reading from St. Paul explains the “divine economy” of stewardship — “The relief of others ought not to impoverish you; there should be a certain equality. Your plenty at the present time should supply their need so that their surplus may in turn one day supply your need.”
2 Corinthians 8:13-14

Thank you for your support.

From the very beginning, our faith tradition has been littered with people who were “on the go.” Think for a moment; Abraham, Moses, Jesus, St. Paul, Mother Teresa, and so many others. Our faith is full of people who are not allowed to sit still.

Today, I would like to pay tribute to one of those people of faith whom the Bishop has called to move on.

Bishop Trautman has appointed Fr. Tom Brooks as the new Pastor at St. Jude the Apostle Church effective July 8, 2009. Regrettably, his selection as Pastor of St. Jude Church is our loss. We cannot overestimate the value of his contributions to Our Lady of Peace. He has brought a spiritual and scholarly approach to his tenure as our Pastor.

Many of you are familiar with Dr. Seuss’ “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” It is a popular book often given to graduates or people that are changing jobs to encourage them to aim high in life. At the end the author tells the reader, “Kid, you’ll move mountains! Today is your day!” And then comes the line I like most; “Your mountain is waiting.”

Ten years ago, the mountain that was waiting for Fr. Tom was Our Lady of Peace Parish; a parish wonderfully served by its previous Pastor, Msgr. Daily. Upon Msgr. Daily’s retirement, the parish welcomed Fr. Tom who picked up where Msgr. Daily left off and directed our parish’s growth. In those ten years, Fr. Tom approached the mountains he faced, the challenges presented by overseeing one of the largest schools in the diocese and serving 2700 families, with tireless commitment and caring leadership.

Fr. Tom not only moved mountains placed before him in the administrative duties as Pastor, but helped us, his parishioners climb mountains placed before them. He has helped people face the mountain of despair in a lonely parishioner, the mountain of pain of one who is ill, and the mountain of sadness of one who has lost a loved one.

One of Fr. Tom’s most rewarding achievements was in resurrecting the scouting program at OLP. Today we have the largest active group in the French Creek Council, one of the largest in the Erie Diocese, and the only one to win a National Award this year. Our Diocesan Catholic Committee is a “Quality Unit” for the 4th year in a row. In the 10 years that Fr. Tom has been Pastor at OLP, he has helped 8 young men achieve Eagle Scout, which is the top scouting accomplishment for youth and takes a tremendous effort over many years to reach.

On a personal note, Fr. Tom has welcomed Deacon Ralph, Deacon John Mang, and me, entrusting to us many of the rituals which are shared by priest and deacon, giving us the opportunity to preach and most of all, helping us to grow spiritually.

Fr. Tom has answered God’s call to go to Our Lady of Peace, has met the challenges and now he has been asked once again, to meet new challenges at St. Jude. Today, at 9:00AM, marks Fr. Tom’s final Mass as Pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish. Although we are saddened to see Fr. Tom leave, we wish him the best as he continues his journey of priesthood at St. Jude.

How do you say good bye to a dear friend?

Fr. Tom, we don’t say goodbye. Rather, we say how much we appreciate your time spent at Our Lady of Peace. Please accept our gratitude for all you have done for your parishioners and may God’s love and grace be with you.
So, the parish community with one voice hails:
Oh, the places you’ll go! Today is your day, your mountain is waiting!

May the peace of Christ be with you. Deacon Tony

The first week session begins June 29th and continue each week through week 5 ending on July 30th.
